SUSTAINABLE FASHION

Sustainable fashion is an approach to fashion that is concerned with reducing the environmental and social impact of the textile industry, using eco-friendly materials and ensuring fair and equitable working conditions.

Ethical clothing refers to the production and design of garments that are socially responsible, fair, and sustainable throughout the production process. Ethical clothing is produced without exploiting workers, damaging the environment, or compromising the quality and durability of the garments. This means that the well-being of the people working in clothing production and long-term environmental sustainability, as well as the quality and durability of the garments, are valued. Ethical clothing also seeks to promote a more conscious and responsible consumption culture, encouraging consumers to buy less and better, and valuing clothing as long-term investments rather than disposable and fast-fashion products.
Sustainable fashion is a fashion approach that cares about reducing the environmental and social impact of the textile industry by using eco-friendly materials and ensuring fair and equitable working conditions.
Sustainability refers to the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In general terms, sustainability is about balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social responsibility. Sustainability is applied in many areas, such as agriculture, energy, construction, fashion, and other sectors of the economy, and is based on the idea that all decisions and actions we take should consider the long-term impact on the environment, society, and economy. Sustainability also focuses on finding solutions to global problems such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and poverty, so that healthy living conditions for everyone on the planet can be ensured both now and in the future.
Sustainable fashion arises as a response to the environmental and social problems associated with conventional fashion. The growing awareness of the environmental footprint and unfair labor conditions in the fashion industry has led to a demand for more sustainable and ethical alternatives. Consumers, designers, and brands have begun to seek solutions to reduce the environmental and social impact of fashion throughout its life cycle, which has led to the development of sustainable fashion.
Although it is difficult to determine exactly which were the first brands to adopt sustainable fashion practices, some pioneers in the field can be highlighted. For example, Patagonia, an outdoor clothing brand founded in California in 1973, has been a leader in promoting sustainable practices in the fashion industry. Another brand that has been a pioneer in sustainable fashion is Eileen Fisher, which began using sustainable and recycled fibers in the 1990s. Stella McCartney can also be mentioned, who launched her eponymous brand in 2001 with a focus on sustainable and ethical fashion. These brands, among others, have been leaders in promoting more sustainable practices in the fashion industry and have inspired many other brands to follow their lead.
A sustainable brand is concerned with the environmental and social impact of its production and commercial operations, uses ecological materials and production techniques, guarantees fair and safe labor conditions, and promotes recycling and responsible consumption.
To be a sustainable brand, it is necessary to use ecological and sustainable materials, produce in a sustainable manner, guarantee fair working conditions, promote recycling and responsible consumption, be transparent, and educate consumers about sustainability in fashion.
According to a report from the North American Development Bank, Mexico produces around 300,000 tons of textile waste each year, of which an estimated 95% ends up in landfills or incinerators. Of these 300,000 tons, it is estimated that around 10% are garments in good condition that could be reused or donated.
It is estimated that approximately 92 million tons of textile waste are produced worldwide each year, of which less than 15% are recycled or reused.
Slow fashion is a movement that seeks to reduce the negative impact of the fashion industry on the environment and people through sustainable and ethical practices. In contrast to fast fashion, which focuses on producing large quantities of low-cost clothing with accelerated production and consumption cycles, slow fashion focuses on producing high-quality and durable clothing using sustainable materials and environmentally friendly production techniques that respect workers’ rights. Slow fashion also promotes the reuse, recycling, and responsible consumption of clothing to reduce the amount of textile waste that ends up in landfills. In summary, slow fashion aims to promote a more conscious, sustainable, and ethical fashion that values quality over quantity.

Combatting fast fashion can be a complex process, as it involves challenging an established business model that aims to maximize profits through the mass production of low-cost clothing. However, here are some ways in which fast fashion can be combated:

  1. Buy consciously: opt for buying high-quality and durable garments, instead of constantly buying low-quality and cheap clothing.
  2. Buy second-hand garments: instead of buying new clothes, you can opt for buying at second-hand stores or online second-hand clothing stores.
  3. Support sustainable and ethical brands: choose brands that adopt sustainable and ethical practices throughout their supply chain and operations.
  4. Reduce clothing consumption: buy only what you need and avoid impulsive purchases.
  5. Learn to repair clothes: instead of discarding clothing, you can learn to repair garments to make them last longer.
  6. Promote education and awareness about sustainable fashion: share information about the negative impacts of fast fashion and the importance of adopting sustainable fashion practices.
  7. Promote legislation: support the implementation of laws and policies that regulate the fashion industry to ensure more sustainable and ethical practices.
Wardrobe
To have a good wardrobe, you should buy high-quality and durable clothing, choose a consistent color palette, opt for versatile items and basics, tailor your wardrobe to your lifestyle, mix and match clothes, and learn how to take good care of your garments.
A good wardrobe foundation for a 40-year-old woman could include a white shirt, a structured jacket, black pants, basic t-shirts, a skirt, a black dress, a warm coat, low or medium-heeled shoes, white sneakers, a quality handbag, and straight-cut jeans. These items can be mixed and matched in many ways to create different looks and should be adapted to the person’s lifestyle and profession.
A capsule wardrobe is a carefully selected collection of versatile and timeless clothing that can be combined to create a large number of different outfits. The goal of a capsule wardrobe is to have a limited number of high-quality garments that can be worn for several seasons, which helps to simplify life and reduce unnecessary consumption. A typical capsule wardrobe usually contains between 20 and 40 items, including clothing, shoes, and accessories, and is updated with new pieces each season. The idea is to choose quality pieces that can last for several seasons, rather than following ephemeral fashion trends and consuming excessively.
